While the market for new natural gas cars is very slim, there is an abundance of trucks that run on natural gas and natural gas buses. The only 2012 CNG car for sale today is the Honda Civic GX, which was first introduced in 1997. It has the cleanest internal combustion engine ever commercially produced. This natural gas powered automobile emits so few pollutants that in some large cities the emissions from the car are cleaner than its surrounding air. California, a state with some of the tightest clean air standards in the nation, has recognized certain natural gas vehicles as meeting and exceeding its most stringent standards, including low-emission vehicle (LEV), ultra-low emission vehicle (ULEV), and super-low emission vehicle (SULEV) standards. In 2008 the Honda Civic GX was awarded, for the fifth straight year, "America's Greenest Car" by the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEE).
European countries have a lot more variety as they can choose from a dozen or so models of CNG cars. There are natural gas car conversion kits available. A gasoline operated vehicle can be converted to compressed natural gas for approximately $10,000.
Many cities are replacing gas buses with CNG buses in their transit system, and in many case CNG trucks are replacing the older diesel garbage trucks. Various industrial companies are replacing their fleet of trucks with CNG vehicles. The initial cost of these vehicles is more than the conventional gas and diesel units, but the long term savings greatly outweighs the start up costs. Due to the price of natural gas, the more fuel the vehicle uses, the more it saves in the long run with natural gas.
Wherever there are vehicles that run on natural gas, there must be CNG fueling stations. Cities that utilize these vehicles put in their own CNG fueling stations. In some areas, these stations are also open to the public.
The biggest drawback in compressed natural gas trucks and buses is the availability of these fueling stations. Across the nation, there are large open areas where there is no station for trucks to refuel. At the present time, there is only one CNG fueling station between Denver and Chicago.
According to the Natural Gas Vehicle Coalition, there are currently 150,000 Natural Gas Vehicles (NGVs) on the road in the United States today, and more than 5 million NGVs worldwide. In fact, the transportation sector accounts for 3 percent of all natural gas used in the United States. In recent years, technology has improved, allowing a proliferation of natural gas vehicles, particularly for fuel intensive vehicle fleets, such as taxicabs and public buses. Virtually all types of natural gas vehicles are in production today, from passenger cars to trucks, buses, vans, and even heavy-duty utility vehicles. In spite of these advances, a number of disadvantages of NGVs prevent their mass-production. Among the disadvantages are a limited distance between refueling, trunk space, higher initial cost, and lack of refueling infrastructure. These impede the number of natural gas vehicles for sale in the United States.

percent of the total automobile market could become powered by CNG.
